Background:      The Building Aboriginal Women’s Leadership (BAWL) Program is intended to increase Aboriginal women’s full participation in leadership roles in your communities. The project will continue to strengthen ONWA’s Capacity to ensure:

• Aboriginal Women in Ontario have the skills, knowledge, confidence and access to act on issues that are of concern to them in their communities
• ONWA Leaders (both in governance and management roles) have the skills and knowledge to be Aboriginal leaders and govern in a cultural, democratic and accountable manner
• There are Aboriginal Women throughout Ontario who are able to represent ONWA policy positions at the various government tables when policy is being developed and decisions are being made that will affect Aboriginal Women and their communities

Regional Workshops:       The Ontario Native Women’s Association’s BAWL Program will reach out to the entire Province but will directly engage with thirteen (13) communities through the delivery of our Community Capacity building sessions.

Hate Crimes Workshop  Fort Erie Holiday Inn

Background:

Ontario Native Women’s Association in part with the Community Hate Crime Response Grants Program and the Ministry of Attorney General have developed the Empowerment through Research and Education Project. ONWA has organized a Hate Crime Research Team focused on increasing the capacity of Aboriginal women and their families by identifying issues surrounding hate crimes and victimization. This research has given way to better understanding and skills that will enable communities to respond with a proactive approach, rather than a reactive one concerning hate crimes.

The Hate Crime Research Team conducted research and developed a survey that resulted in the development of educational resource tools and materials that will be utilized in the delivery of the Hate Crimes Workshops.

This project was developed from an Aboriginal Women’s standpoint allowing the Research Team to ensure that the research done was respectful and culturally relevant to the Aboriginal women and families served.

Regional Workshops:

The Ontario Native Women’s Association will be hosting Regional Workshops during September 2008 to front line workers, service providers, justice workers and community members. ONWA will subsidize travel costs for members to attend.

· There is NO fee for this workshop

• Workshops will run from 10 am until 4 pm and lunch will be provided
• Necessary airline travel and hotel accommodation will be arranged by ONWA. Be sure to complete attached registration form in full and return two days prior to your selected consultation.
• One registration form per person.

Travel and Expense Claim Details:

1. Claims for hotels, childcare, parking, bus, taxi, or airfares must be supported by the original receipt.

2. Expenses including, but not limited, to tips, telephone and extra costs will not be paid.

3. Lunch will be provided the day of the consultation. Other meals during travel will be reimbursed at the following rates.

Breakfast $10.70; Lunch $10.45; Dinner $29.35.

4. You are required to attend the consultation in your region and/or the shortest/most economical distance from your home community. Travel by public transportation will be arranged via the most direct route, economy class, unless otherwise approved by ONWA.

5. Child care expenses for children up to the age of sixteen (16) will be reimbursed up to a rate of $35.00/day for one or more children. Original receipts are required. The individual claiming the expenses must be the primary caregiver to the child(ren).

6. Expense Claim forms will be available at the Consultations. Claims with attached receipts are to be submitted to the Meeting Coordinator that day or mailed to ONWA within two weeks after the consultation, and will be reimbursed within 30 days. Expense Claim forms received later than two weeks after may not be reimbursed.

7. We will do our best to accommodate all needs, but there may be instances in which we are unable to accommodate your requests
