Free Community Event – Slide show and talk on African beadwork and the link with Iroquois beadwork through Samuel Thomas

On Saturday, March 17 Munuve Mutisya, visiting Akamba Artist from Kyanzasu, Kenya

and Founding Director of the Akamba Peace Museum shared his experiences with us teaching us more about East African indigenous culture. We heard about African peace tree traditions and beadwork designs.

We also heard from Samuel Thomas and about his work with Munuve in Kyanzasu.  Sam and Munuve are engaged in an international project called “The Great Tree Of Long Leaves” and this project has taken three years to complete.  The tree is a combination of Iroquois and African beadwork technique and stands almost six feet tall.  It is currently on exhibit at the United Nations in New York, U.S.A.

This free community event  brought to us in partnership with the Ontario Arts Council, The Canada Council for the Arts, and Niagara Chapter – Native Women Inc.
